Honey

It wasn’t uncommon for me to lose myself in my work. For the past week, Kahlil had been slowly taking my work materials to his place. I thought it was cute, and I honestly didn’t mind spending more time with him. He’d turned one of his guest rooms into a workspace for me. It had a day bed that I took my breaks on and a large dining room table I used for my desk. I didn’t know why I’d never thought about using a dining room table as my desk, but it was the perfect solution to keep me from having to keep moving and alternating things while I worked. I was able to have everything I needed spaced out which helped me be more organized and work a little quicker, but it was still a slow process because of how careful and thorough I was.

I didn’t realize how long I’d been working until I heard soft knocks against the door. Looking up, my eyes first focused on the window. The brightness of the day had been replaced with darkness. I checked the time on my phone as I told Kahlil to come in. I’d been here since he left for the library this morning, which meant I’d been at it for eight hours straight.

“Hey, beautiful,” he greeted, walking over to me.

My smile was sincere, even though discomfort shot through my body. “Hey, handsome. How was your day?”

His happy expression faded as he watched me stretch. “Have you been working since I left?”

“Yes.”

“Honey…” Kahlil took my hand and led me over to the day bed. “What did I tell you about that?”

“I had a thirty-minute break.”

“Yeah, but I can tell you’re in pain. I’m going to book you a massage for tomorrow.” He removed my glasses and set them on the small, round table next to the bed.

“Baby, you already got me the hand massager that’s on the way. That’s enough.”

Ignoring me, Kahlil undressed then sat next to me in bed.

“How much more do you have on the book?” he checked, massaging my hands.

“Maybe another week. Now that I’ve finally gotten the pages removed from the binding, all I have to do is clean them then rebind it. The cover and spine are in good condition, so I don’t have to do anything to them. The biggest job is going to be cleaning all those pages.”

I was sure he was listening, but he was too focused on massaging my arms to respond. As he worked his way up to my face to gently massage my eyes, I asked about his day. He told me, and I chuckled as he expressed his disdain for a group of young hoodlums that came in talking loudly and laughing up and down the aisles. If there was anything he couldn’t stand, it was people talking loud in the library and not putting the books back where they belonged.

Kahlil had me to turn, and he gave me the best shoulder and back massage I’d gotten in my fucking life.
